Is the Gambit Movie Ever Going To Get Made?
Director Doug Liman, no stranger to sci-fi with films such as Jumper and Edge of Tomorrow, may be delaying the Gambit movie in order to jump on another sci-fi project, an adaptation of the Chaos Walking trilogy. Though nothing has been confirmed yet regarding either Liman leaving the Gambit movie or his involvement with the Chaos Walking project, many are assuming the worst for Gambit, which has already experienced a series of delays.
The Chaos Walking trilogy is another young adult sci-fi dystopia (see also The Hunger Games, The 5th Wave, The Maze Runner, The Divergent series, and many others), set in a post-apocalyptic landscape where women have seemingly disappeared and all living creatures can hear each other’s thoughts. The series follows a young boy and his dog (spoiler, I bet every time he reads the dogs mind, the dog is thinking about food…) as they are forced to flee their village after a startling discovery. Along the way, they discover a mysterious mute girl. The series was previously slated to have Robert Zemeckis (Back to The Future, which is the only credential he’ll ever need) in the director’s chair, working from a screenplay by Charlie Kaufman (Being John Malkovich, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind), but they have apparently lost interest in the project, leading to Liman’s reported interest in the project.
And while this doesn’t necessarily mean the end for the Gambit movie, apparently Liman would start on the first book in the Chaos Walking series after wrapping action thriller The Wall for Amazon, but before getting started with the Ragin’ Cajun’s cinematic debut. Liman’s involvement with Gambit was announced after the original director, Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) left due to rumored scheduling conflicts. There are also reports that Channing Tatum is considering moving on from the Gambit movie, though this is definitely just speculation at this point. However, this project could definitely use some good news soon.
So, are you interested in the Chaos Walking adaptation, with the possibility Doug Liman taking the helm? Or would you rather have him focus on Gambit? Here’s to hoping that if the Gambit movie does finally move forward, Gambit gets better treatment than he received in the fan non-favorite X-Men Origins: Wolverine movie.
