The Dark Tower Movie is Gaining a Great Cast
It was recently announced that a film adaptation of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower series was moving foward. At this time, it is set for release on February 17, 2017, and the production is slated to start soon. It was also announced that the main role of Roland Deschain (the Gunslinger) will be played by Idris Elba, and his archenemy The Man in Black will be played by Matthew McConaughey. However, the casting of the protagonist has sparked some controversy, as the character is generally portrayed as a white, Clint Eastwood type. Racial prejudice plays an important role in the series, with one of the characters, Susannah, having dual personalities, one of which hates white people.
King weighed in on the issue on twitter, saying “To me, the color of the gunslinger doesn’t matter. What I care about is how fast he can draw…and that he takes care of the ka-tet.”
It has now been announced that another crucial character has been cast, that of Jake Chambers, Roland’s spiritual son. He will be played by a relatively unknown young actor, Tom Taylor, most known for playing the younger version of Sean Bean’s character on the TNT series http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2402137/Legends.
Jake’s story is a complicated one. He comes from our world, and is drawn into Roland’s Mid-World, where he dies, and becomes reborn all over again. He isn’t a mere sidekick however – he endures much physical and emotional pain in order to help Roland save the world, or at least one of those worlds.
There have been rumors about the casting of Eddie Dean (reportedly, he is to be played by Breaking Bad’s Aaron Paul), and apparently the producers have cast Mad Max: Fury Road actress Abbey Lee as Tirana, a character specifically created for the purposes of the movie. Unfortunately, we still don’t know have any casting news about Susannah’s character.
