A Peter Jackson, Steven Spielberg Alien Invasion Movie Would Be Epic
At the end of June, it was announced that Peter Jackson and Steven Spielberg would be continuing the Tintin franchise and that Jackson would direct the next installment, The Adventures of Tintin: Prisoners of the Sun. Spielberg also revealed, at the same time, that “he’s doing another film for my company [Amblin Entertainment] now. It’s a secret, nobody knows about it. Then after that, he’ll do Tintin.” And since then, it’s been radio silence. However, it was just announced that Amblin has completed a deal to purchase the script for alien invasion movie The Fall, which begs the question, is that the secret project Jackson is working on?
The Fall, a spec script written by new talent Pete Bridges, has an interesting pitch:
“In the midst of an alien invasion, a freshly divorced couple must survive a dangerous real-time journey on foot from downtown Atlanta to the suburbs, where their young children are home alone.”
Bridges, who was discovered through the screenwriting site Virtual Pitch Fest, had his first spec Resurface make the Blacklist and get picked up as well. That movie has a similarly punchy premise, being described as a survival story set at the bottom of the Marianas Trench.
Jackson’s Next Project?
Now, Spielberg and Jackson previously collaborated on The Lovely Bones, and Jackson has expressed an interest in returning to more personal films, in the vein of The Lovely Bones and Heavenly Creatures. So there’s a decent chance that he’ll be working on a smaller scale project with Spielberg. However, Spielberg already has a bunch of films he’s set to direct, with The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara, Ready Player One, Indiana Jones 5, and It’s What I Do (and a rumored historical epic centered around Montezuma), which means if he wanted to direct The Fall himself, he’d likely be waiting until at least the early 2020s. So it makes sense he might pull on another director for the project.
Another candidate for the project is The Dam Busters, a remake of the World War 2 aerial action movie, which Jackson owns the rights to and has even already built some replica bombers for. Hopefully, we’ll get more information on the secret project soon, which should be interesting whether it’s alien invasion movie The Fall or not.
So, what do you think? Would you be interested in the Peter Jackson / Steven Spielberg alien invasion movie The Fall? Or would you be more interested in a Dam Busters remake? Or something else entirely?
