I’m Dreaming of a Timey-Wimey Christmas…
This Christmas will bring another dose of festive Doctor Who adventures, complete with a new companion Bill played by Pearl Mackie, and two new cast additions: a new hero, played by Orphan Black star Justin Chatwin, and Heather, played by Stephanie Hyam of Peaky Blinders, Sherlock, and Jekyll and Hyde. Returning star Matt Lucas, hilarious actor of Small Apartments fame, will be back as the previously decapitated Nardole.
Who will Justin Chatwin play in the 2016 Doctor Who Christmas special?
A picture revealed at New York Comic-Con shows Chatwin in full superhero gear, complete with flowing cape and fancy black mask, standing on top of a skyscraper at night, hands on hips- the whole superhero shebang. No hints have been given away as to the plot of the Christmas special, but the cast present at NYCC, including Peter Capaldi, Pearl Mackie, Matt Lucas, and EP’s Steve Moffat and Brian Minchin, were all very excited about it. The tangible love and passion the cast and crew have for the BBC show is what truly differentiates it from other shows on the air.
What can we look forward to with Mackie as the new Companion?
Pearl Mackie, the Chosen One of over 70 hopeful Companions was chosen by Andy Pryor due to her playfulness and warmth. He says in an interview with Radio Times, “I think already it’s clear she’s her own person who’s not going to be impressed easily. I think that’s quite a fun thing to explore, and it’s something that Pearl is brilliantly equipped to do.”
OK. I’m now officially very sad that I can’t be at New York Comic Con this year. Among the things I’ve missed so far are the War for the Planet of the Apes panel, the first episode of BBC America’s new Dirk Gently series, and now, the debut of the Class teaser trailer and panel for the upcoming Doctor Who spinoff. Thankfully, the BBC must feel my pain, because though Fox isn’t releasing any of the War for the Planet of the Apes footage, at least the BBC is sharing the Class teaser trailer.
